Beach Buggy Racing 2: Hot Wheels™ Booster Pack Review – PC

I love racing games of all kinds, and kart racing is definitely one of my favorite sub-genres, so it was no surprise just how much I adored Beach Buggy Racing 2 when it released back in March.  With its vast assortment of tracks and crazy power-ups combined with a robust car and driver upgrade system there was a lot to like.  Now, only two months later, Vector Unit turbocharges the original game with some quality licensed content from Hot Wheels; content that isn’t just dumped into your lap but content you’ll need to earn.

For those who played the original and loved that big colorful Adventure map as much as me, prepare to explore it all over again as there are new Hot Wheels Cup races added to the winding path.  These Cup races will combine new Hot Wheels tracks with existing tracks allowing you to earn more stars and unlock one of the seven new legendary Hot Wheels cars.  Hot Wheels collectors might even  recognize names like; Rip Rod™, Surf ‘N Turf™, Bone Shaker™, Twin Mill™ III, Donut Drifter™, Hotweiler™ and Loco Punk™

There are four new Hot Wheels tracks, all constructed from realistic orange and blue plastic track pieces that loop and elevate in crazy configurations, some pieces with side rails and other without.   They even have those spinning side wheels that boosts you car into loops or epic jumps. Volcano Blast, Hot Wheels Harbor, Looptastic, and Frostfire Vale can all be played immediately in a special event that features all four tracks, but after that these tracks get mixed in with the rest of the content.  You can also access the new tracks directly through Quick Events.  For those looking for the ultimate challenge check out the new Hot Wheels Stunt Challenge that’s been added to every track in the game accessed via the new 1000HP race mode.  Conquer these events to collect all 27 Stunt Challenge Medallions.

While there are no new drivers added to the roster there are four new paints and four new decals to customize your cars as well as six new achievements to unlock.  Combined with everything already discussed there is quite a bit of fresh material included in this DLC.  My only issue is the price.  This “booster pack” costs half as much as the full game but only contains a fraction of the content.    I think $5 would be a better value, all things considered.  But if you’ve been craving some more Beach Buggy 2 content and have $10 kicking around then strap in for some quality racing with a definitive Hot Wheels flavor that is undeniably appealing and just as addictive as the core game.

I've been an avid gamer since I stumbled upon ZORK running in my local Radio Shack in 1980. Ten years later I was working for Sierra Online. Since then I've owned nearly every game system and most of the games to go with them. Not sure if 40+ years of gaming qualifies me to write reviews, but I do it anyway.
