Verne: The Shape of Fantasy Review – PC

In a gaming landscape filled with blockbuster titles and immersive experiences, Verne: The Shape of Fantasy distinguishes itself as a true indie gem. Developed by Gametopia, this game takes players on an unforgettable journey through the pages of classic literature and into the realms of time and imagination.

At the heart of Verne: The Shape of Fantasy lies a captivating narrative that draws inspiration from the timeless works of Jules Verne. Players will join Jules Vern as they set sail aboard the enigmatic Nautilus under the command of the mysterious Captain Nemo. The story kicks off in the late 19th century, but it doesn’t take long before it embarks on a thrilling journey that transcends time and space.

The storytelling in “Verne” is a testament to the power of narrative in gaming. It skillfully blends elements from Verne’s classic novels like “Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea” and “Journey to the Center of the Earth” while introducing its unique twists and turns. Dialogues are rich with historical context, characters are intricately developed, and the sense of wonder and adventure is palpable. The voice acting is top-notch, bringing each character to life with authenticity and depth. As you uncover the mysteries of the Nautilus and explore uncharted realms, you’ll find yourself utterly engrossed in a narrative that keeps you hooked from beginning to end.

While the story is a key highlight, Verne: The Shape of Fantasy also impresses with its innovative gameplay mechanics. The game seamlessly weaves together puzzle-solving, exploration, and a unique time-travel mechanic. As you navigate the depths of the ocean and journey through subterranean worlds, you’ll encounter a wide array of puzzles that challenge your intellect and creativity. These puzzles are well-crafted, striking the perfect balance between being thought-provoking and accessible.

The time-travel hook is one of the more interesting game features in “Verne”. It allows players to rewrite specific events in history, although these choices remain constrained to the overall narrative. This feature not only advances the storyline but also introduces exciting opportunities for replayability and narrative branching. Whether you’re being boarded by enemy soldiers or escaping a Kraken attack in the past or deciphering ancient hieroglyphics in a distant future, the time-travel aspect adds a layer of excitement and the illusion of choice to the gameplay.

The world-building and puzzle design in “Verne” is surprisingly excellent.  Making the most of retro pixel art, each environment is meticulously designed with incredible attention to detail, immersing players in breathtaking landscapes and settings, all the while looking like an old Sierra game.  The Nautilus itself is a work of art, with its steampunk aesthetics and atmospheric interiors, and viewing it all at once via the detailed map screen can be confusing at times.  The seamless blend of the narrative reality combined with fantastical elements ensures that every moment spent in the game feels like a true adventure.

Verne: The Shape of Fantasy is a shining example of the storytelling potential in video games. It transports players to realms beyond imagination, seamlessly blending the genius of Jules Verne’s literary creations with modern gaming innovation. With its enthralling narrative, clever gameplay mechanics, and overall technical excellence, this game stands as a modern classic.  I did appreciate the availability of four total save slots in case the family wants to play their own games, but I was a bit confused with the limited resolution options.  You can toggle window or full screen but the game maxes out at 1440p; not that 4K graphics would actually improve upon the retro art style.  The music is totally immersive as is the overall sound design, which as you might guess has a lot of watery effects and reverb.  The voice acting is also surprisingly spot-on with each character sounding believable and engaging.

If you’re in search of a gaming adventure that invites you to explore uncharted territories and captivates your imagination, Verne: The Shape of Fantasy is a must-play. It’s not merely a game; it’s an epic odyssey that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
