Pixel Gear Review – PlayStation VR

For all the shade I throw at PS Move for its problematic tracking and constant recalibration issues it was refreshing to finally play a game that had none of that. Pixel Gear is a classic light-gun style shooter that uses (actually requires) a PS Move controller to aim your chosen weapon at a wild variety of pixelated targets all advancing on your stationary turret-like position. Games like this live and die by their controls and Pixel Gear has some of the best and most accurate targeting I’ve seen in any VR or PS Move controlled game to date. We’re talking double-tap headshots on creatures out to the horizon that were no more than a few pixels wide with no targeting assist.

The only thing better than the precise controls are the totally delightful graphics that show definite inspiration from the world of Minecraft. Everything has this “built-from-blocks” look about it right down to when you shoot and destroy various monsters that break apart into random pieces. The boss fights are even more impressive with gigantic creatures that can take several minutes to defeat as you work to discover and target their weak spots.  This is all accompanied by suitably themed “scary” music and fantastic sound effects – love the TINK when you blast an enemy’s helmet off.

There is even a bit of strategy buried in the gameplay and the between-wave loadout screen. In the first level you have bats carrying exploding pumpkins. You can shoot the pumpkin to kill the bat or shoot the bat to have it drop the pumpkin and bomb whatever is below. You’ll also earn gold coins that you can use between waves to purchase new weapons, additional ammo, or other game-modifications.

My only critical complaint for Pixel Gear is the apparent lack of content. There are only three worlds (themes) and each of those have only a half-dozen waves before you reach the big boss. The game is so much fun that I really wanted more. Thankfully, the developers acknowledge this lack of content with the low price of $11, and you should have no trouble getting at least that much fun out of this entertaining shooter.

Pixel Gear is great fun and with its ghosts, ghouls, zombies, and witch themes this is the perfect week to play this Halloween-inspired game. No tricks here…just a real treat of a VR shooter that the entire family can enjoy.

I've been an avid gamer since I stumbled upon ZORK running in my local Radio Shack in 1980. Ten years later I was working for Sierra Online. Since then I've owned nearly every game system and most of the games to go with them. Not sure if 40+ years of gaming qualifies me to write reviews, but I do it anyway.
