Zen Studios’ Operencia Developer Diary #1 | Inspiration, Lore and Art

Check out the first developer diary for Operencia: The Stolen Sun, coming this spring to Xbox One, Epic Games store and Windows 10.

In less than six minutes, you’ll gain a solid grasp of what inspired this modernization of the first-person dungeon crawler – everything from centuries-old stories that shaped the world to where the name “Operencia” comes from in the first place.

To start things off, Game Designer/Writer Oliver Sandor describes how we came upon the decision to create the game and mentions some of the core inspiration behind the world – some really cool stuff. Writer Chris Baker discusses some further inspiration in terms of story and lore. And do you know what a Buso is? Lead 2D Artist Tamas Gaspar introduces you to these fearsome – but somewhat loveable? – antagonists derived from actual history, and he’ll also take us to the beautiful Copper Forest (it’s so metal!). Finally, 2D Artist Lali Juhasz walks us through the process of creating the game’s amazing cutscenes.

I've been an avid gamer since I stumbled upon ZORK running in my local Radio Shack in 1980. Ten years later I was working for Sierra Online. Since then I've owned nearly every game system and most of the games to go with them. Not sure if 40+ years of gaming qualifies me to write reviews, but I do it anyway.
