Grand Theft Auto Online Heists Available Now
Today we are happy to announce that Heists are now available to play in GTA Online. The Heist update will arrive as a free download for all players on the Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation3, and the PlayStation 4. Heists will arrive for PC when the version launches on April 14.
What are Heists?
Heists are a new type of gameplay experience inside GTA Online – they are massive, multi-layered, 4-player co-operative missions that encourage players to work together and make the most of their individual strengths, and a team’s level of communication and coordination can make or break each mission.
Rather than existing inside the current forms of GTA Online, they are now essentially a game within a game, designed to add another major option to the experience of GTA Online alongside Free Mode, traditional co-op jobs, competitive modes, and races. Each Heist has its own story and set of missions that have you interacting with new and returning characters from the story of GTAV.
Sometimes you will be working alone or in pairs, and sometimes as one tight unit in order to execute your objectives, and each player will have a completely different experience depending on their role in each mission. Communication is key. You’ll need to be in close contact with your team and sometimes synchronize your action in order to succeed.
There are five total Heists with the first serving as a tutorial for two players.
Hosting and Joining Heists
To host a Heist in GTA Online, your character must be Rank 12 and own a high-end apartment. If you are under rank 12 or do not own a high end apartment, you can still join a Heist another player invites you to.
To join a Heist as a crew member without an invite, go to the Quick Job menu on the phone. Select “Play Heist” to quickly jump into the action.
Once you complete the prerequisites above, Lester will give you a call to set up your first Heist. Once you complete your first Setup Mission, there is a brief delay before Lester calls you for the next part of the Heist. There is a small delay between completing your first Heist and Lester’s call for the next Heist as well.
To replay a Heist, simply call Lester using your in-game phone and select the “Request a Heist” option when he answers. From there, you’ll be able to play any of the Heists you’ve previously completed. There is a cool down period after the completion of each Heist before that Heist can be replayed
Triggering a Heist
Players who are rank 12 or above and own a high-end apartment will receive a phone call from Lester.
When a player accepts Lester’s call and begins the Heist they become the Heist leader and can choose to invite other players from the lobby, their friend’s list, or players from the previous Heist. Players of any rank that have already completed the GTA Online tutorial up to and including Gerald’s first LTS job can play Heists.
The heist leader has the responsibility of fronting the setup costs to acquire whatever equipment and additional NPC personnel needed to pull off the job – which amounts to a percentage of the final payout.
Members earn money for completing each setup mission.
Heist leaders do not earn any money for completing a setup mission, though they do earn 10% more RP than other members. Leaders can assign themselves a larger portion of the take once the entire Heist is complete.
Successfully completing a setup missions drops players back into Freemode. The Heist leader can then use their phone to return to the Heist planning board and start the next job in the strand.
Heists are available for replay after completing each full strand as Heist leader. Players can do this by calling Lester and requesting a Heist. There is a short delay before you can replay the same Heist again as Leader. Heists are available for players to join as crew members without delay as long as there is a Leader with an active lobby to join. The Heist replay board becomes available at your high-end apartment once you have completed all 5 Heist finales as Leader or crew member (but you must also have reached rank 12 and visited Lester to access it).
There is also a cool-down period between the completion of each Heist and when the next one becomes available. At the same time, new Adversary modes will progressively unlock as you complete each Heist. Adversary modes are fun new asymmetrical gameplay types within GTA Online.
There are 16 new missions spread across 3 new modes:
Come Out To Play
A team of three Runners just trying to make it home, and a team of Hunters are out for blood. Runners are well-armed but limited to movement by foot, while the opposition wield free-aim shotguns and ride motorbikes or ATVs. Hunters must stay on their bikes and have access to unlimited lives, while the Runners have just one life but all their weapons available to pick off the Hunters at will.
Up to four players stand their ground, outnumbered but not outgunned as they fight to survive against up to 6 determined attackers in a location defense mode, GTA style. Attackers have unlimited lives but fight only with sawn-off shotguns. Defenders have full use of all their weapons.
Hasta La Vista
The chase is on as Truckers in big rig cabs hunt down a team of Cyclists. The Cyclists’ goal is simple: reach the final checkpoint without getting crushed under the wheels of the pursuing trucks. Without traditional weapons the Truckers must rely solely on their vehicles to crush the Cyclists. Meanwhile, the Cyclists must harness the maneuverability and acceleration of their bikes to evade the trucks, while keeping an eye over their shoulder. If one of the Cyclists reaches the checkpoint, the Cyclists win. If all Cyclists are terminated, the Truckers prevail.
New Daily Objectives will give you a rotating series of challenges to take on for GTA$ rewards (unlocks at rank 15). Players also earn RP for completing their daily objectives. There are three new objectives per day – complete them all to earn a cash reward. Players can stack up challenges over consecutive days and weeks to earn bonuses of up to $500,000.
Elite challenges – Each Heist Finale has its own set of Elite Challenges. These consist of multiple target criteria and can be completed multiple times.
There are also Special Heist Completion bonuses that can only be achieved once per person. For example, completing objectives under a specific time or sustaining minimal vehicle damage. Successfully completing all these targets net players additional cash at the end of the heist and can be repeated on subsequent play-throughs. (These challenges cannot be completed on easy difficulty and become void if trip-skips are used.)
Each Heist has its own Elite Challenge. Here are some examples:
- First Time – Completing each Heist Finale for the first time, will net you a bonus cash reward
- All In Order Challenge – Complete all Heists in order, including Setups, to receive a $1,000,000 cash bonus
- Loyalty Challenge – Complete all Heists, including Setups, with the same team of players to receive an additional $1,000,000 bonus
- Criminal Mastermind Challenges – rewards players $10,000,000 one-time bonus for completing all 5 Heists in order, including all setups, with the same group of players, without anyone losing a single life on hard difficulty. The one-off bonus challenges are linked to in game awards. You can monitor your award progress via the Stats > Awards tab in the Pause Menu.
- As players progress through Heists, new vehicles will become available for players including the Mammoth Hydra Jet, Valkyrie Attack Helicopter, Insurgent with .50 cal mounted machine gun, and more
Additional new equipment and items will include
- Night Vision Goggles
- Flare Gun
- New outfits, masks, t-shirt, helmets
Alongside the launch of Heists come a range of changes and additions to GTA Online including:
- New point animation
- Ability to email other players
New Free Mode Activities
Players also have new opportunities for cash and RP rewards with new activities added to the world in Free Mode. Be on the lookout for calls from Lester, who may need help to distract the cops in a specific area while Lester’s accomplices finish their criminal business. Lamar may call looking for help destroying a vehicle or two, while Trevor and Ron need occasional help picking their business rival’s planes out of the sky. Along with GTA$ and RP bonuses, there are all-new Awards available for completing these challenges with style.
